Operation Wolfhunt update

Post by Kahless »

Despite all of the Overtime, and other pursuits I am involved in nowadays, I have continued to press forward with my BZ novel, and I am making progress. The novel is about 95,000 words, and I just finished a critical edit process Saturday. I have 4 more edit processes, my Time and Measurement edit, Sniper Edit, Military Protocols edit, and a final drive thru edit, before I copyright it and hand it over to my first line editors, a couple of former marines who work with me. After the final editing is done from their reviews, the book will go up for the BZC members to cretique.

now the Forum says ]['m just a Pilot, which is not
accurate because ][ rarely pilot any BZ ship now.

Recently had to rename the Russian Czar to 'Stalin'. No self respecting commmunist would name his tank czar, as it is a representaion of a Monarchy style of government.

Also changing will be Grizzly, as even though it is uniquely a western animal, it is still a bear, and no american would invoke that symbolizm in a struggle with the Soviets.

It is aparent that the Activision team was soft on their understanding of the struggle between east and west.

I like your perspectivity (2. relative importance and true relationship of facts ideas, etc).

That's why I hate Harry Potter - a complete smorgaboard of anything that pops into that woman's mind!

Unfortuneately, the world is so incredibly stupid, and so Potter is a huge success.

I hoped to make the logic of the story seem as real as possible. James Bond movies were real popular, but if it wasn't for girls, guns, and fancy gadgets, but the plots general are cheesy. There are two basic premises of the BZ story that I could not explain away.
1)Why the public space race didn't use alien technology, because the struggle was very political and the propaganda on both sides was very important.
2)Why someone didn't just whack the enemy satellites when they flew in on the next transport carrier.

Otherwise, I have woven the basic BZ storyline all thru the book and it all seems to fit otherwise.

I just got out of a meeting yestarday and our overtime is projected for months. That is the biggest challenge at this point is triaging what little time I have left over and the extreme weariness I face.

There was a real Stalin tank, produced at the end of WWII, so I don't know if that is appropriate, to steal the name for a unit that came along in the bz world not all that much later.

Czar is really a corruption of "Caesar" or latin for king, ruler, what have you, so is suitable for what is the "king" tank of Soviet ground forces, unless a heavy tank is introduced.

By the same token, the Grizzly, while a bear, is basically an American symbol of power, being the largest predator in the country.

The name 'Tiger' was applied to different tanks in the Tiger series.

Stalin was good ol' 'uncle Jo' - just a Soviet citizen - not some king or 'czar'.
By the same token, the Grizzly, while a bear, is basically an American symbol of power, being the largest predator in the country.
Which is why America uses an eagle - dah!
There are two basic premises of the BZ story that I could not explain away.
One of the most famous masterpieces of cinema - Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' - has a plot akin to a Swiss cheese!
That is the biggest challenge at this point is triaging what little time I have left over and the extreme weariness I face.
LOL! - Get back on up to the attic! And keep 'triaging'. Haha. :P

Yep, Stalin was just a good ol' Soviet citizen - the one who could send you to the gulag for any little offhand remark criticizing Comrade Stalin or the Party in general... lol.

NSDF unit names:

Razor
Bobcat
Grizzly
Wolverine
Thunderbolt
Badger
Unabomber
Rat Pack
Sasquatch
Longbow

That's a shaving implement, a natural phenomenon, a "domestic terrorist" (WTF? Ted Kazinksy wasn't blowing ppl up in the '60s, lol) a rodent herd, and a primitive projectile launcher - plus 4 animals and a putative one - anyone ever see a real Bigfoot?

The trend is clear towards animal names, though. IRL, most US tank names are for Generals.

The book does not have to completely follow each detail of the game, though much of it does. My challenge is to take the science fiction premise, and make it as real as I can, based on history, world politics, etc... I hope to have some ppl finishing it and think it might have been possible. For all the others, it is what it was meant to be, a science fiction story that you sit back and just enjoy, and give artistic lisence to the few discrepencies you may find.

The problem is, it has taken almost four years to do this, and the end is left 'open out' with a hook to go into book two, which will be something like... 'At War with the Dragon, A Red Odyssey.'

Actually, no offense was intended, but besides the Young Guns Clan members, all other names were, as far as I can tell, ficticious names, (though it is possible someone may have played under these names and I didn't know it)

But you will emjoy the heavy reliance on snipers. My nephew has been to sniper training school in Ft. Benning GA, and he sent me a training disc. I am going to run my sniper stuff thru a final edit after reading thru the material. My current main source was a former marine who went thru sniper training here in my office, but unfortunately he transferred to an outside job, so I don't get to see him any more to discuss stuff. My other good friend Bob, also former marine, is trying to transfer into outside management at this time, so both of my main sources may be long distance contacts.

And the overtime drags on, so I am not able to stay with this every day.

I did the Sniper course at Ft. Bragg, it wasn't the actual "Official" Course but it was the official course for Bragg. My next sniper course was in the clan called OGC. Now that was tuff!

I'm glad you picked up the info you needed, there is a lot to take in. I used to compete with pistols, .45 cal and was invited to All Army match in Ft. Benning 3 times, but only made it once. It was always a fun post to be on.

My seasonal overtime seems to be seriously slowed down. Even though I am getting more sleep, I can't seem to feel it yet.

We have our Boy Scout Court of Honor Friday night, so much of the hard work I have involved myself in will seriously slow down after then until next March.

Sooo...soon I will be starting the time and measurement edit, which will be a bit boring, but it has to be done. Once I am done, Dredd, if you want to be on the team that proof-reads the sniper stuff, I'll add you to the small list. I will most likely start making more progress on the book now that I don't have to live here at work and I get my free hour back between end of my shift and my ride picks me up.

Sorry I didn't answer your question. The whole book started as a simple possible 8 page story for the Young Guns, and at that time, BZF websites. The problem is the thing seemed to never start growing.

In time I realized it would be come book one of two novels. There was a slight problem. To keep myself on track with the plot, I dealt fast and loose with time and measurement references, knowing I would have tighten them up at the end. I also had to go back during my scientific edit, and change some things to reflect to reflect was was scientically plausable. I knew I would have to leave sopnme of this all the imagination, but I wanted it to feel as real as possible.

The main trouble is when I make a change, it creates ripples throughout the book and I have to track them down and correct them.

I have a lot of respect for authors like James Clavell, who spent 12 years living in Japan to write the book 'Shogun', and wester writer Louis L'Amour, who literally imerses himself in research before writing his novels.
