Game Crash

Post by Killer ][nstinct »

Thanks to KM for all his hard work on 1.5
I played BZ 1st time in... 3 years(?) last weekend.
Game is installed on Win7
Graphics card is NVIDEA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

Problem: Attempting to Load a Save crashes game
][ was an Administrator once... then ][ demoted
myself to Founding Member (which ][ still am), but
now the Forum says ]['m just a Pilot, which is not
accurate because ][ rarely pilot any BZ ship now.

Any save game, or one in particular?

Could you attach your save game so I could try loading it in a debug build?

Hi "Super programmer Ken Miller" *

Maybe it isn't the .sav file after all?

1st crash I experienced was with an existing .sav file that I had backed up on an external drive. Of these old .sav files which I used for years with 1.4, game1.sav leads to NSDF Mission Archives allowing the loading of any NSDF Mission. Well it crashed the game after clicking "Next Mission".

So I thought my 1.4 saves wouldn't work on 1.5 ... further testing this evening proved my old game2.sav (CCA Mission Archives) from 1.4 loads perfectly! Go figure.

Next / most recent crash: I played one evening through NSDF Missions 1, 2, 3, & 4 then saved after beating Mission 4. (This .sav file would be the one I have attached, as it was created by your 1.5 executable.) Returning to the game and loading the "new" save brings up the mission success .des file display, then clicking "Next Mission" crashed the game to Desktop with this dialog box:

I was able to load that save file without incident, so it may be a compatibility issue with the integrated graphics processor or its driver. If it isn't too much trouble, could you try some of the older builds to see if it's something that broke recently?

Do you have the common files installed K][?

Ultraken: All the links to previous builds are dead... "Sorry, we can't find "www.bzuniverse.com". We suggest that you check the spelling of the web address or search above."

Dx: What do you mean "common files"? FYI I got an installer from navbeacon, who told me it was Spock's installer "with some of his stuff removed". I did not ask nav what he meant, I figured maybe some gay .wav files or gay skins... EDIT: Here's the link i used, it isn't dead!

I've been getting issues trying to connect to bzuniverse.com also, I get that nice 404 redirect to a search engine. I went to check out some other bz2 website but they aren't saying much, is there some sort of upgrade going on?

The mirror links should still work since they connect to my local file server. (Downloading might be a bit slow since my cable modem's outbound speed is about 50KB/s)

If you get a really slow connection to ken's mirror, use a proxy and the speed is quite good.

Here is the common files, http://www.battlezoneclub.org/forum/vie ... =70&t=2753

I'm not sure what makes it slow since I haven't done anything to throttle it. (Time Warner, on the other hand...)

Ultraken & Dx: My bad, I was clicking the wrong link DOH! The "Executable" link is the dead one, the "(Mirror)" link works. No speed issues here, I have 13.72Mbps download speed. I grabbed the bzone_2011-01-16 version, and am about to try it.
Results forthcoming guys :D

EDIT: The older bzone_d3d9.exe loads both the recent save1.sav file AND the older save1.sav/NSDF Mission Archives file from 1.4, YAY!
However, an unexpected side effect is that the game played "Drop it drop it low girl" song at the BZ title screen, and some other rap tune to the mission "Total Destruction" I loaded. At first I thought it to be some temporary music you (Ultraken) inserted into the .exe, but it turned out to be my stepdaughter's burned music cdrom in my pc's dvd drive, LOL! This proves to be very interesting, as I have a cdrom of The Red Odyssey music, or I could play some Rush while I play Battlezone, heheh.

Second, afterthought EDIT: Dx: I got the 3 Common Files downloads and put 2 in the "dll" folder, and the label.map in the parent dir. :) Thanks for the explanation, dude!

(hmm, can't edit the above post any more...)

Ultraken: Sorry to say, but using a different .exe causes Multiplayer Mission Version Mismatch, didn't you know that? So using the older .exe is no fix...

It was never meant as a permanent fix. The goal was to find which version broke it so I could track down what changed. :)

Knowing that 2011-01-16 works narrows it down to the 01-17, 01-20, 01-27, 01-29, 02-05, 02-07, 02-10, 02-12, or 02-15 build. If you want to save yourself some time, you can do a binary search by getting the build in the middle of that range, 2011-02-05. If that one works, try for 2011-02-12 build; otherwise try 2011-01-29 build. You'll eventually get to a point where one build works and the next one doesn't. Let me know which one is the first that doesn't work and I'll investigate.
