Bah! Where we live, we don't have open water! So what do we do?
Chainsaw! Seriously, that's what we do for the yearly polar dip
. Though I'm not crazy enough to jump in. Yet.

Same here. Lake is frozen solid most of the winter.
Obviously an ocean shot in this pic.

Esquimalt!
When were you there? I lived in Victoria/Vancouver for the better part of 10 years.

Re: Bored at work today....
My ship pulled in there for three days around May 2006, we were going to stay longer but some idiots got into some trouble and the skipper didn't like that. We went on a tour of a castle, saw the Parliament (I think) buildings, ferries and saw a museum of some sort near the Parliament buildings. We also hit up some snazzy clubs in Victoria, I specifically remember me and my buddy drunk, frantically running through the streets looking for an ATM to buy more Absinthe
Oh yea me and my buddies also made a contest to see who could get the most hi-fives from people we walked by while in Victoria, all the Canadians played along! You'd get shot here in the US if you tried that in the wrong area!
I liked it there, everyone spoke English and weren't fat
I'm considering going back for my own type of vacation-exploration adventure

Canada does indeed seem quite friendly.
Also, is it just me, or is the Canadian accent quite similar to the Texan? I know two Canadian musicians from Vancouver, they seem to sound quite similar to my friend from Texas. I assume it must be just me.

lol it must be just you. Vancouverites and Texans have never sounded remotely similar to me. And there are tons of Canadian accents. Each province has at least two plus several variations of those.AHadley wrote:Canada does indeed seem quite friendly.

Ah so after I had moved on. Yes, mostly likely the Parliament buildings, tons of museums nearby... Of all the "snazzy" clubs did you hit Little John's?Sno wrote:My ship pulled in there for three days around May 2006, we were going to stay longer but some idiots got into some trouble and the skipper didn't like that. It's this weird little place tucked into the ground floor of a four star hotel. Totally out of place. The ceiling is decorated with hanging bras and halloween decorations that can be dropped on customers tables from pull strings behind the bar. Little John himself tends bar wearing no shirt and denim overalls.
That description doesn't really do it justice. Have to see it for yourself.

There were doors in the back that lead to the hotel lobby. Sometimes you'd be sitting there and some of the hotel patrons would walk through those doors...i don't know, thinking they were heading to the street, or maybe heading into a bar very much unlike the one they had just stepped into.
Sitting at the back paid off just to see their expressions when they stepped in.

I'm not sure what club it was, we were there for one night for about 2 hours then had to report back to the ship because of a Cinderella curfew (before 12AM, our captain trusted no one past that time and to get a hotel for the night took an act of Congress).

Re: Bored at work today....
Hehe, I remember "Cinderella curfews" when I was in the US Navy. We didn't call it that, but was the same idea and generally applied to those who had a habit of coming back to the ship drunk at around 0600 when we were leaving dock sometime in the am. That was one serious torture, leaving dock and heading into fairly rough seas with a massive hangover. I was a quartermaster and was on the bridge during departure. And there was usually a few smoking. If the weather was severe enough, the windows would be closed and side doors as well. That was pure hell. If I was lucky, I'd be assigned to one of the compasses on the bridge wings in the fresh air.Sno wrote: I'm not sure what club it was, we were there for one night for about 2 hours then had to report back to the ship because of a Cinderella curfew (before 12AM, our captain trusted no one past that time and to get a hotel for the night took an act of Congress).

All of Vim's insults are weak. He's not very creative, as I'm sure you've noticed.
