Post Your Rig!

Post by hitchcockgreen »

Aw hell, I figured since it was scattered around in a couple of topics, we should post pics/specs of our BZ/E rigs.

Mine is still a work in progress, but this is what it is so far:

NZXT Phantom EATX Steel Computer Case 5X5.25 7X3.5/2.5 With Integrated Fan Controller - White

(it's a monster full-sized case, but great design)

ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA1366 DDR3 CrossFireX SLI 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 PCI USB 3.0 Motherboard - ASUS - SABERTOOTH X58
(definitely not the best in it's class but with a 5 year warranty and my experience with ASUS has been nothing but positive...and two weeks after I bought it, they came out with their sandybridge version.....)

Intel Core i7 960 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 3.2GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S Retail Box
(in retrospect, I should have just got a 920 d0 and saved some money  )

Thermalright Venomous X-RT 6 HeatPipes CPU Cooler W/130MM Low Noise Fan LGA1366 1156 1155 775 AM2

Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 XMP Triple Channel Core i7 Memory
(only have one kit so far...I can max my board out at 24GB and I plan to  )

OCZ Vertex 2 Extended Sandforce 60GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
(only used to house the operating system....I have a 750GB WD Scorpio Black where I install everything, and a 1TB WD Caviar Green that holds music, pictures, software, etc, etc...used to be part of a RAID backup I had before my enclosure died)

Corsair TX750W 750W ATX 12V 60A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 140MM Fan
(not modular, kind of wish it was, but lots of space to hide the cabling!)

EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
(yes, for $100 more I could have picked up a 560, but the performance for that price is fantastic...and besides, I expect I'll probably pick up a second one in the coming months and set them up in an SLI)

Corsair Vengeance 12GB 3X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 XMP Triple Channel Core i7 Memory

NZXT CB-LED20-GR Sleeved LED Kit - Green, 2 m
(it just looks pretty  )

NZXT FS-200RB 200mm Case Fan
(this is a secondary one....unlike the 200mm fan the case came with, it doesn't have LED lights.... I added it to the top of the case for additional exhaust, and not to the side panel because my heatpipe will probably eat up all that space  )

I forgot what the specs are on this one , hell it's 8 months old ... time for a new one. I will however post a recent picture of me and show that when I get online and start talking smack how easy it is for me just to roll right over into my bed when I'm done =)

Ah Antec case... They make great cases.

I have an Antec at work and that was my serious second choice for my new home computer. It lost out in the end. :)

Special keyboards? I was seriously considering going with a mechanical keyboard and still might...if everyone else here can put up with the clickity-clacks.

Minor update:

I'm kind of wishing I had gone with a modular PSU instead of the one I've got, and it's a little hard to justify buying another when mine is brand new.

Still considering getting another GFX card and teaming them.
Also considering some more fans, maybe a different CPU cooling system and a larger SSD card for the OS.

And I can never quite decide on my HDD/RAID configurations.... I think I've changed them three or four times now.

I've also started looking at and researching parts for a micro PC. I was going to go with just a tiny box of a desktop (it'd still be crazy powerful) but then the whole concept of a media center PC caught my eye and I'm toying with that.

Probably a ways away before I mess around with that build.

It's not a rig, but I just got a new Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop which I'll be using for all my BZE playing from now on. I'm assuming this means I'll show up with a different IP address right?

Only if the laptop is connected directly to the modem without a router in between.

Or if you configured your router to clone your mac address (doubt it, most people don't turn that option on)...

I only do that once in a while to change my IP (not so much "cloning" as just making up a different MAC address).

Also: in my monstrous upgrade I came across something rather disparaging... One of the RAM slots on my MOBO seems to be defective.

There's a few tricks I'm going to try to get it not-not working right (probably tomorrow) but I've already filed an RMA just in case.

Damn.

I'd rather be RMA'ing RAM than the whole freakin' mobo.

Ugh, that's a complete teardown if you have to return the mobo...

I know.

I could live without the one slot working but what if something else fails?

I have a 5 year warranty on the board, so I wasn't initially in any rush.

However, I did finally hear back from ASUS and since I've only had it for a few months they'll send me a new one as long as I send the defective one back within 14 days. I think I can manage that.

But I am definitely NOT looking forward to the teardown.

Of course, I could always use the opportunity to do a few things differently or try a few different components.

5 year warranty on a motherboard?
That's getting silly, the price must be insane.

No it was only about $200.

"Military Grade" components hence the 5 year warranty. Apparently "military grade" doesn't preclude it from defect.

lmao

maybe the problem was the heatsinks were made out of biometal composites. :)
