Diaspora - Battlestar Galactica online

Post by hitchcockgreen »

Just stumbled across this. Apparently it's completely free and actively developed.

I was reading through their forums and it looks like NBC may be going after them for IP copyright violations. Bummer...

Looks really nice.

One game I played to death in the mid 90's was the Luca Arts 'Tie Fighter' space sim.
"Are you going to be using Newtonian physics?

Nope. The show doesn't so we won't be either. The show uses a cross between Newtonian and "Aeroplanes in space" which we are trying to reproduce. Going to a fully Newtonian model would actually result in combat being less like the show. Given that we are aiming to be as close to the show as possible that's simply not going to happen, no matter how many people tell us it would be cool."
This looks like something similar with an only a slightly dated graphics engine.

While I would MUCH prefer the physics be more like 'Independence War', this can still be a load of fun to master.

That's too bad. Especially a shame when NBC likely has no intention of licensing out the name for a game themselves. It's free, so what's the harm?

Battlestar Galactica Online, that's the harm. This is a F2P game that is officially licensed, anything competing with it is harming NBC (purely legally speaking). The game is a piece of crap so it'll die off before too long anyway and NBC may stop the hunt at that point.

Yes, I was getting confused as to how many BSG F2P games are out there.

At least a few...I noticed there was also a browser-based game...which would likely be terrible. :)

Was looking at the space games over the years again and wondered what issues I'd have trying to install I-War 2 on my win7 64bit laptop.

Installed and plays without the slightest hiccup. . . I was shocked. And even provides 1900x1200 32bit. The frame rate is liquid smooth.

I did the same and it worked just fine. It's a hard game to master though...
