Damn, I see they knocked $100 off the price of the Galaxy II S at this weekend's Tiger Direct/CompUSA Black Friday sale.

If I had only waited 2 months. . .

I did wait :) but I'm not technically due for an upgrade until 12/17. That means it's probably be even cheaper, might get the Rocket by then...

A creative barrista...

I work with a theater company and all of the designers have Apple and all of the stage crew has Android. The stage guys used to have iPhones until they dropped 'em...

Not scientific but it's pretty clear who performs better.

lmao holy s**t. that iphone was wrecked!

I don't know what they use for glass.... I know samsung uses Gorilla glass, which is basically just glass made by Corning (you know, the kitchen bowl glass company) and it's pretty damned resilient. When I bricked my first I9000 I took it outside and did my own tests on it. I stabbed at it with an exacto knife, dropped it on the sidewalk, you name it. Even stabbing it had little effect. It wasn't until I curb-stomped it that the glass cracked. And still not to the extent of the iphone in that video.

My current I9000 I've dropped MANY times and aside from some knicks from the sides there is absolutely no damage to the glass.

I'd also recommend anyone that has a smartphone get a Zagg skin for it. I've been using Zagg protective screens for my phone and that stuff is also pretty resilient. It absorbs a lot of pocket gouges really well with no scratches or damage to the actual glass.

I heard the new iPhone uses gorilla glass but it must be really thin or they designed it out to the edge with no protection and it is more susceptible to breaking. Either way, it's clear that durability was not on any of the designer's minds when the built the iPhone. At some point, people are going to get tired of replacing broken iPhones and Apple will have to make them more durable.

I know apple had been using an aluminosilicate glass that was made in China which was similar to Gorilla Glass, but I haven't found any definitive answers as to whether or not the new 4S has GG or some other similar product.

I have used Zag Skin in the past, but I'm not sure how well it would work on the back of the Galaxy II's textured back. Plus the back of the phone is a very thin and inexpensive piece of plastic, I could replace for a few bucks I imagine.

I love the feel of GG, like it has a perpetual wax coating all the time, so I'm going with the risk of scratching it.

We'll be seeing glass several times more resilient to Gorilla glass in the next 2 or 3 years.

That reminds me of the Star Trek Movie where Scotty give the kid the formula for transparent aluminum...

Not bad. I can use the phone most of the day (maybe an accumulated 2 or 3 hours) reading books, phone calls, surfing the web, maybe watch a bit of a movie or a few youtubes and it drops to around 25%. I never get panicked like I used to get with my Pre' late in the day away from a charger. But of course the battery is new as well.

The Zagg invisishields are fine for the back. You don't have to get the kit that covers the entire phone, just the front. I'm a little hard on my phone and on my second Zagg shield in a year and a half. In addition the shields have a good texture...makes my phone less likely to slip out of my hands. I suppose it would be similar to the backing on the black SGS2. The white ones have a different battery cover, if I recall, that's a bit slick.

I doubt I would have gone for $300 with a 2 year contract.

No. The major selling point, at least to me, was android 4.0 on it (which provides the slickest features) and since that has already been ported to a dozen older handsets in various stages of beta I see little reason to want a nexus.

Same specs as the original, just thinner.
I took my first sgs and curb-stomped it after I bricked it. The force must have been in excess of 127lbs of pressure. That screen finally cracked but not after I had attempted a number of abuses on it (stabbing it repeatedly with an xacto blade did hardly anything nor did trying to carve into the screen with one).

And the area in front of you in your car will soon be largely a flat reflective piece of flat glass.

That'd be fine...as long as it's in a self-driving car. :)
