Where's My Winter?

Post by hitchcockgreen »

Yes. I AM complaining.
Here it is nearly the middle of December and it's 0°C and kind of raining. Bad year to have bought an expensive parka; the type which is used in the Antarctic.

We did have some colder weather earlier and so the lake has quite a bit of ice. Really nice ice actually. I don't think I've ever seen ice as smooth and clear (the lake bed is visible in shallower parts of the lake) - at least not on LOTW. I've seen it on smaller, less exposed lakes around here.

From what I'm told, shallower parts of the lake are nearly 14" thick.

Later today I venture out and try to take some pics. If it does get consistently colder I'll have to sharpen up my skates.

Not too often you have natural ice that nice to skate on plus there isn't really any snow so you don't have to shovel off portions to skate on.

I don't care if it rains, or is foggy everyday, or is 40F and misty, or if we have 10 feet of snow.

I am just happy it's not 100F with 70% RH.

Winter 15F = Jackets, pants, hoodies, scarfs
Summer 100F = Less clothing on women

Winner = Summer 100F

I like the cold. A lot. So naturally I'm disappointed that there isn't any so far.

Not exactly getting much of a return on my investment in that damned coat.

The US never signed on to the Kyoto Treaty...

Did anyone hear if this last summit produced a true agreement or what?

I too am disappointed by the lack of cold. I hate rain, too, so when I'm getting almost constant rain here in Indiana instead of snow, it makes me upset. And like Hitch, I haven't gotten my money's worth out of the L.L. Bean winter coat I bought to replace my aging old one. I've only used it twice, and for brief periods of time. BRING ON THE COLD!!!

No same old s**t, I think. "Commitments to whatever" kind of statements but nothing serious.

And yeah, the last 10-15 years winters have been decidedly less 'cold' here than ever. We'll still get the odd week or so of a cold snap in January, but by and large it's not the winters of yore.

The last biggie here in NC was 1999. We got 22" of snow and 6-8" a couple other times that year. Last 3 or 4 years here, we haven't seen more than 4".

Temperatures dropped to about -14°C this morning....and a light snowfall overnight probably ruined that glass-like ice surface.

Still not COLD but closer to what I want to see here.
Trips to Antarctica are, as you can imagine, are quite expensive.

We seen 10" in Asheville area last year.

There used to be a guy named "Hatter" that played the last BZE version every few days or so. . mostly on weekends, that lived around 12 miles from me and about 3 miles from my GF. Never met him in person. Not sure if he is aware that a newer version of BZE is out.

Current ice conditions are questionable. The weather has been yo-yoing. +2 - -14 with both rain and snow. I attempted to take pictures today but my phone camera crashed. The joys of alpha-release ROMs.

You can keep your snow up there. Last year, Georgia went nucking futs over how much snow we got.
