I have had 5 or 6 different insurance companies and I haven't yet run into a preexisting condition clause, so it's not always an issue. Plus, when you are looking for work, benefits are a big part of the decision. Even when the economy is down, companies use benefits to help attract and retain quality talent. If the benefits suck, people go elsewhere.
That's what is keeping me at my current job....for now. :)
FirBirGir wrote:By the way, why does healthcare as a civil right mean it has to be free (of course nothing is really free)? I have the right to own property but I pay for it year after year through various taxes, and don't get me started on how much "pursuit of happiness" is costing me.
Not necessarily. Although it does mean it has to be accessible to all - even those that normally would not be able to afford it. So basically it means that there has to be free healthcare, but not that there can only be free healthcare. In fact one of thing that is misunderstood about Canada's health care system is that it is actually a two-tiered system. You can go for free and maybe wait a bit longer for non-life threatening or non-emergency surgeries, or you can pay.

Property rights are a bit different in Canada than the U.S..... while you were granted the "pursuit of happiness" we got stuck with "responsible government." lol
The right to security of the person was recognized in Canada in the Canadian Bill of Rights in 1960. Section 1(a) of this law recognized "the right of EVERYONE to life, liberty, security of the person and enjoyment of property, and the right not to be deprived thereof except by due process of law." However, the Bill of Rights was a statute and not part of the Constitution.
In 1982, a right to security of the person was added to the Constitution. It was included in section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which stipulates that "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice." Security of the person in section 7 consists of rights to privacy of the body and its health[3] and of the right protecting the "psychological integrity" of an individual. That is, the right protects against significant government-inflicted harm (stress) to the mental state of the individual. (Blencoe v. B.C. (Human Rights Commission), 2000)
You read right. It is my constitutional right to not be stressed out by my own government.

I heard a right is something that can't be taken from you, yet Government does this all the time.
All truth goes through three stages:

•First it is ridiculed
•Then it is violently opposed
•Finally it is widely accepted as self evident

Maybe it's only a right if it can be taken away.

Do a search on OWS and anti-capitalism. These folks really don't know what they are talking about...

Some, but not all. Baby with the bath water argument.

I noticed their audience wasn't particularly large and their body language suggested reservation at best.

The spirit of the protests live on despite propaganda to the contrary: lobbying and corporation involvement in government trump all arguments.

SOPA anyone?

There are numerous videos of these types of anti-capitalist discussions. I don't see folks inside of OWS doing anything to correct these misinformed neophytes nor to discourage their display of ignorance. Instead of having an anti-capitalism teach-in, someone should be conducting Economics 101 so they can at least talk intelligently on the subject of socio-political and economic systems. With that many out of work college grads, you'd think there would be at least a couple of Economics majors among them. No wait, those would have a job instead of sitting on a sidewalk.

They sound like Mr. Mackey, "Capitalism is bad, mkay."

I'm all for removing corruption from government, it crosses all politcal boundaries and exists in every form of government; worse in some than others (look at the mess Russia is still in decades later). Like I said many times over, their energies could be much better spent by getting organized and focused. They went from anti-Wall Street to anti-student loans to anti-banks to anti-foreclosures to anti-whatever is next. What are they pro-about? What are the changes they think would be positive and could support? Here are some if they need help:
  • Term Limits for all elected officials
  • Term limits on all appointed positions
  • Campaign reform
  • All elected officials are treated like other government employees so no automatic raises or full free pensions after 1 term in office
  • All elected officials are subject to 100% tax on their government funded salaries if they net over $1M a year (in other words, no tax dollars go to paying millionaires who can buy their way into office)
  • A multi-year moratorium on being hired by corporations holding government contracts
These are actionable items with specific outcomes that will have a direct impact on the behavior of politicians. This is where real change starts, not chanting poorly written slogans on a street corner while eating beans out of a can and crapping in a bucket.

It's difficult to sum up all Occupy camps with one set of goals or single message since each location had their own set of goals and message (on top of a basic OWS one).

I don't think that it ever "turned into" an anti-capitalism/anti-student loan/anti-whatever. That, again, is focus on a fringe element within the ranks of the protesters. Focusing on them makes it easier to have the public write them off as nuts or commies or what have you.

It's like saying soldier funerals are fundamentalist cults because Westboro Baptist Church protesters show up for them.

Someone needs to inform this chick hippie that if she wanted a job after college, she shouldn't have changed her major 10 times and ended up with a degree in ... Journalism?? Wow, that actually surprised me. I thought it was English or Literature, but I guess finding people to write columns is as easy as eating pop tarts?

Oddly enough, the most boring classes (some of which I had to take) are actually the most worthless. Should I forward these to the English and Literature professor I had?

There's another great example of what I'm talking about. Why would she get an education in a field with no jobs available? Who made her choices for her?

She and the rest of the "fringe" shouldn't be using the 99% slogan, they are a different 1% that no one can relate to nor have pity for. They created their own situation and want to blame someone else.

Kids these days go for easy degree's and expect to make +$65k a year off the bat, and rarely comprehend the fact that the degree is to get them INTO the field right at the bottom of the food chain. I don't know any other outside influence, other than professors, that tell kids that worthless degree's will open doors. Take for instance, the English and Literature professor I took. She kept telling us to get involved in her field of study because it's soooo interesting, opened doors to careers and satisfying. Well, being someone in her field she's limited to teaching kids how to make flawless papers and sentences for superiors or being of some use for historical exhibitions...nothing more. I highly doubt agencies like NASA, DoD, and ARPA are in desperate need for people her in field.

Society has thrived to this point of technology because people got involved with studies that challenged them to think, thus innovations were made. The degrees listed in those links may have been a big deal over 50 years ago, but times have changed.

As a side note, there are tests administered throughout all US high schools to help identify what areas the student is strong in and presents them with careers to check into. Same thing in college, along with numerous resume, employment, interview and career decision work shops. If you cannot find at least a starter-type job after college, it's probably because you didn't start looking for one 8 months before you graduated or your degree is useless outside of college (see above 3 postings). I don't expect to make more than $55k a year off the bat even with my past credentials from the military, but recent graduates that went to college straight out of HS and worked as a server at Dennys the entire time raise the bar beyond what I expect.

I was somewhat shocked that #8, Mechanical Engineering Technology was considered a useless degree, but at the same time astronomy is one of the best?

Yeah Astronomy is kind of far fetched. Hard to get work in that field, honestly, which is why I abandoned it.

Applied science is where America really needs workers. Science in general (minus the airy, more theoretical sky gazing ones, naturally).

Because as it stands now, all the big thinkers of science in America are immigrants.

Scary that America isn't producing it's own, at least.

And of course having temporary immigrants doing the critical thinking science jobs means that when they're done they don't necessarily stick around.

Oh, and this one is for you Sno....

If true, this is the atomic bomb Ron Paul overlooked in his backyard. . .

Blatant libel? An overzealous campaigner? A wild-eyed congressman? . . .Ouches one way or another, there some 'plainin to do.

The actual...so-called...direct mailer.

But there's no worry, Ron Paul knows his constitution!

lol yeah I've seen all the "newsletter" exposes about RP. And yeah, he denies involvement in all of them.
But he seems just too clean to me, you know?

I mean, I know he doesn't like abortion, and that's a negative for me. And even if he were elected, you know 90% of his campaign promises could never be met, right?
I mean, those newsletters kind of make him sound like Manson.
