Hard Drive Prices are recovering

Post by FirBirGir »

They're getting back down to pre-tsunami prices

http://www.compusa.com/email/compusa/CUEM1017.asp

The solid state drives are still too pricey for me considering their size...

Yea, I was tasked to buy some HDs in early December and it was painful compared to what I remembered early last year.

Yeah I noticed that too, but stock seems to be still somewhat limited.

We managed to get 10 drives just before christmas, but we're still waiting on another three IBM drives for two new servers.
Originally we were told maybe as much as 3-4 months to get the drives we wanted (1 TB drives for RAID).

I wasn't worried about the IDE prices, I knew it'd take another year or so for SSD to come down more. Once they offer ~1 TB drives for under $200, I'll be dancing like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ

I'd love SSD prices to drop. I'm seeing an OCZ Vertex 3 120 GB going for the price an OCZ Vertex 2 60 GB was 12 months ago.

For a barracuda, too. That's not too bad.

Dkid you see this drive?

It's only 5400 rpm but still, 4TB is huge...

I bet that beast has some slow read-write speeds.

I'd like SSD prices to drop some more, want to replace a spare 500gb drive with an ssd eventually.

SSD at that capacity likely won't be cheap any time soon.

The unfortunate thing about SSD is that it uses the same kinds of chips used in flash cards, USB flash drives, RAM and smart phones. Those markets are huge and so is the demand. Come holiday seasons manufacturers can barely keep up.

Unless more places than Asia start mass producing them manufacturers will get away with charging whatever they like.

SSD has come down in price but not as much or on the scale that platter based drives have.

I had my first intimate experience with an SSD when I built a PC for my boss a couple months ago. They truly are a quantum jump in performance. When the PC was 'naked' with little more than the 64 bit Win7, MS Office. Autocad, etc., it booted to usability from the on switch in just under 25 seconds.

Mine still boots in under 15 seconds.

The key is setting it up so that User profiles and program data is stored on a secondary platter drive and to disable a number of "features" like system restore, hibernate and the like on the ssd.

Yea, I did nothing special to get the 25-ish second boot to a usable desk top. Still, as opposed to a platter HD booting well over a minute, it's still very impressive.

I really need to switch over to a SSD for my laptop.

SSD is great in a laptop, particularly when other specs will be below those of a desktop. Makes a world of difference.

Another way to get more speed out of an SSD (or even a platter drive for that matter) is to create a virtual boot disk on it.

You can set fixed disk size or expandable.... typically I always go with fixed as expandable seems prone to more errors and more wear on an SSD.

You can even dual boot that way if you want another windows boot partition to experiment with.

Have a SSD in a mini netbook with Windows XP. Upgraded it to a 64gb ssd 4 months ago & it's very fast. As long as the write isn't slow your fine
