Twitch.TV

Post by Sno »

Anyone ever watch some of the live streams on Twitch? I do when I'm doing hw and need to have something "interesting" on to keep me distracted enough from becoming bored with schoolwork. I was thinking about doing live streams of BZ / BZE / BIONITE. Then I thought of doing a collaborative effort with you guys -- where we all have access to the stream and can stream when no one else is on it. This is a way to attract more folks to the BZ universe.

Limme know what ya'll think.

I often run a coast to coast am show while working on the pc.

BZE has plenty of potential, it's far from dead. If some old players join back or even Google it one day and comes to this forum they will be so amazed they will get back into swing

Anyone interested in doing the collaborative effort? It'll involve playing some strat/dm games and talking over mic and interaction with any chat room folk. Obviously, we'd all get mod privelages so we can boot any Spock-tonians that infiltrate the chat and spew nonsense.

I have a dual core Athlon with a 256mb video card. I don't have any other equipment. If you can get a 2v2 strat team count ME IN or any team games (DM). Time wise I'm available late evenings to late nights, but if everyone can agree to the times I am down.

I've got time over the weekend in the evenings. I'm fairly confident my rigs specs can handle it.

I wanted to make a note that you may only need a few people to stream, like one or two dedicated streamers since BZ only has that first person view. It shouldn't affect the other streamers.

I've personally would like to have replays and the ability to have a separate observer modern RTS-style, as you could see the game as a massive whole rather than in a first person view for BZ1, BZ2, Bionite, whatever. It would open BZ for everything like shoutcasting, but I have to admit that trying to come up with either option is not easy to figure out by any means.

That's why we have the observer craft. :)
Well, at least in DM.

Technically you could do it in strat, as well.

Well, the idea I had would be more of being able to switch between different cameras. Like being able to select a tab to choose a team then being able to move the camera to focus on a certain unit.

Itwhere one it'd be nice moreso to not take up a team slot, unless someone comes up with some idea of making a 5 team map where one team is an observer with a commsat. I'd like to have something that doesn't take up resources of possibly crashing into something.

I've never quite understood the fairness of the 'spectator' mode you see in many current games. One that comes to mind is 'Tribes: Ascend'. You can flip around to any player you wish and have a 3rd person view. While T.A. has no voice chat, you can easily communicate with anyone in Team Speak and relay the players position and intention. Seems like a built-in cheat to me.

While that is true, I think the idea is having a way to share what's going on without taking up resources, both in game (player slots), bandwidth (said player streaming the game), makes it easier to broadcast for things like progaming since you can easily switch to anywhere. This also doubles for a good learning tool since you can see what the pros are doing (I did this with Starcraft 1 when I was trying to get back into the game.) It also have a nice bonus of being unobtrusive for BZ since you don't have some random tank or craft floating around that could get bumped into or accidentally take hits.

On that note, if someone could cheat using that option in Tribes in Teamspeak, what keeps someone from following an enemy and broadcast their movements with the observer craft in BZ?

Nothing I guess. Observer craft is weaponless though and can't be piloted by the ai

Current games with spectator modes designed for e-sports have a delay system built-in (usually a couple minutes difference. If it isn't, then professional casters normally have some sort of way to delay the casting. If your worried about people cheating via watching the stream while playing then you might want to look into this delay method.

I've watched the occasional twitch.tv livestream (even got to play with a PCGamer editor while he was livestreaming SWTOR). If you guys made a Battlezone livestream then I'd watch it!

Personally, I don't think there are enough of us around to worry about anyone cheating in a streamed demo game.

I think it'd be miraculous to get a three person strat going, for example, without 'recruiting' from the other server.

Now on a good night, you can still get a decent sized Dm going, but I haven't participated in one of those in about a year now I guess.

Besides, if we are doing this to get the word out, I assume that all participants are going to be honourable and forget the damned thing is even streaming and just play the game. Why else would we bother?
I have two screens, but going to fullscreen in one fudges up the display in the second, so I don't
I'd ever want to go to the hassle of setting up a perfect alignment to see what everyone else was doing.

Now back to the setup;
Sno, Firestorm... have either of you played with any of the capture software?
I downloaded two of the recommended software titles but didn't think much of either of them.
Of course, I didn't spend too much time on the second and the first just aggravated me. :)

The big difference in the BZE Observer "UFO" and Tribes, is you can instantly flip from player to player and essentially keep an eye on everyone on a team. In BZE, you don't have that ability, which makes it much more restrictive.
