Striping a pair of those should be a killer drive...

Yeah striped SSDs is actually a pretty sweet setup.
One of my coworkers has that kind of a setup on his PC.

My laptop has a fast SSD, the read part is ridiculous when it's loading Windows - less than 30 seconds

I manage a boot in about 11 seconds with a fairly fresh windows install.

But my ProgramData and Users folders are mapped to another drive, so as those grow, so does the boot time.

Its a older Intel Atom CPU, it's the Asus eee PC series. There nice small laptops, never had an issue with it so was worth going to a better ssd. My battery life is also longer.

Yeah lack of moving parts is much less of a power drain, for sure.

ASUS do manage to make some great hardware. I'd love one of their transformer prime tablets.

Anyone see these yet?

The only 'disappointment' I have with this is that it still runs Android 2.3 when it should clearly be running 4.0.4 by now. So many improvements.

Finally figured out what was holding up my boot sequence with my new SSD.

ASUS' Quick Boot application residing in the background. It allows a very stripped down ASUS OS to boot in less than 10 seconds. But I never use it, so I disabled it and it shaved another 6-8 seconds off the boot to W7. I also disabled hibernate (as you suggested HCG) and also enabled TRIM.

Along with disabling around 10 services, I'm now booting to full desktop functionality in about 34 seconds. And shutdown in like 5 seconds. Wooo-hooo.

Is that their one-stop-shop if your pc is having major issues? DELL has something similar if so, does memory/processor/HDD/USB/sound etc testing thru a DELL GUI if you can't do anything in your primary OS.

After a lot of review, booting from power-on to a usable desktop can vary on the same system once you load a bunch of programs even if you ensure they are not part of the start-up sequence. Many of the Youtube videos of guys booting with an SSD are claiming times that start after the BIOS is done and are fresh Win7 OS installs. If I do that, then yes, mine is booting in around 23 seconds even a couple dozen programs installed.

No, it's an ultra stripped OS that allows you to boot with face recognition, listen to your music, play some very basic ASUS games and do some limited file management. A novelty item thrown in with ASUS systems.

I've got something similar on my work pc. Basically a stripped down mini OS you can boot into if you are having issues...and then play games while you wait for tech support to answer your skype call i suppose... :)

I have loads of apps on my home pc (the one with an ssd) and still get really fast boot times.

There are a few things that will cause your boot time to slow down;
Program installation location. If it's on the ssd it will degrade speeds. This includes %programfiles%, %programdata% (hidden directory) and the Users account folders.

If those are all redirected to a fast platter drive you won't have as many speed issues.
Startup apps are another culprit as are program processes. Adobe is bad for this as is apple.

(I reluctantly keep itunes for purchasing music but have been using it less and less since i sold my ipod.)

Still now i can do a reboot from the OS to the login screen again in about 40 seconds.

I now have a 512gb SSD as my main drive and a 256gb SSD as my secondary.

I bought an ULTRA external enclosure for my old secondary and will keep my old primary with W7 as a backup image. It was pricey and a tad painful to be sure, but my laptop is now easily the fastest computer I've ever used.

One small observation; using an external enclosure for a 2.5" HDD could be problematic if one is not careful. The small size makes it easy to grab it and treat it like a phone or some other solid state device. . . pick it up, swing it around, toss it around, etc. With no protection to stop the platter or lift the head off the platters, I could easily see myself killing one.

1.5tb for $80.00. Not mind-blowing, but not bad at all.

That is a pretty sweet price. Better grab them up before the holiday rush for iPhones eats up all the component availability.
