With apple there's just one device. That's it. No variation on screen size, hardware specs variants of source code.
iPhone's 1-5 vary in all the things you mentioned, don't they? I'd create an app that is compatible with a device that's up to 3 years old. Anything beyond that limits the potential of the app, and your market as well. Making a "lite" app could help, though.

Slight variations in hardware between iphones. But that's apparently quite easily compensated for.

Very slight in comparison to Android but this kind of fragmentation seems to be increasing with each new iOS release.Sno wrote:hitchcockgreen wrote:Slight variations in hardware between iphones.

So basically one of the main points iPhone fan boy pundits claim superiority over android is becoming less and less true.

Re: My BZ2 Experience
That doesn't make sense. How is writing an Apple App satisfy a request for an Android app? Companies, like the nursing one you mentioned earlier, will typically settle on an OS and write apps for it. If they have Android phone, you had better deliver an Android app or you're not getting paid.FFAxTomcat480 wrote:Well, fad or no fad - don't wanna be caught programming for Droids, he won't even take work on unfinished Droid apps because it just takes too much time to figure out what they were trying to do vs. making an entire different app; he just makes them the exact same app in Apple, put it in the Apple Store & problem solved.
If you are referring to apps for general public consumption like a Dr. Pepper app (you know, shake your phone, pop the top and watch virtual Dr Pepper spray out), then it's pretty much irrelevant. Those kinds of apps are frivolous and bank on riding the "app" wave.

Re: My BZ2 Experience
Given that Android is dominating, I think it's more than the do-it-yourself types. I think FREE has more power than the Apple brand. When you can get a similarly capable Android for free instead of paying $200 minimally for an iPhone, most people are choosing free. Apple fans will usually buy Apple regardless of cost, feature or alternate choices. That fact doesn't persuade the rest to follow suit.hitchcockgreen wrote:I find that droid users are more do-it-yourself types. I know, I know, you can jailbreak your iphone, but even that is a one click procedure.
To those that love thinkering, Android is the better OS to play with. It doesn't cost you a thing to download the AOSP source and change anything you want.
I've mostly been a Samsung user since using 'droids, so I can't comment on whether or not other manufacturer's do this, but Samsung also release their kernels to the public.
It also doesn't cost you anything to develop for android. To get the SDk for iOS, and to develop big apps, you've got to shell out a lot of money.

Re: My BZ2 Experience
Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, etc, they all say that their limitations are an intentional "feature" until they fix it then suddenly it's the new Nirvana. The iPhone 5 will definitely have new hardware specs including a higher resolution screen. Why would Apple not at least try to keep up with Android? Yes, that means iPhone devs will have to check the version of the device and yes, they will have to make decisions based on screen size and processor power. Welcome to the real world of developers.hitchcockgreen wrote:

Re: My BZ2 Experience
It sounds like similar issues games have when developed for a console vs a PC.

Re: My BZ2 Experience
Absolutely. SDKs are a solid investment.
The good thing about consoles, of course, is that you only have one set of specs per console per generation.
The thing about PCs, obviously, is that you dev for the best possible specs at the time and f*** all the rest.
