Free to Play is turning into a scam where you have to pay to be competitive. It preys on those weakminded enough to spend thousands on a game, usually all on credit cards.

I was playing one of those turn-based Flash games and could raise my level 10-20 levels a week. I noticed that others had bought their way up to level 10,000 in the first month and within 3 months were over 100,000 (a free-only player would have to play for decades to achieve the same level). Like most free-to-play games, time is the real currency. This particular game gave you the ability to buy out the time delay 100% so it was just a matter of how much did you want to spend and how fast. Some people respond to this much like gambling.

Yeah I've seen those kinds of games before. Seeing as my console remains offline (or rather can't go onto PSN) this kind of thing wouldn't be a worry to me.

What they're talking about is next-gen consoles for sure. And yea there is still the issue of content delivery. No one wants to download several gigs of game every time they buy one.

Steam sure thinks so. There was a game voucher I received, and I realized it wasn't one to use at Target or Best Buy...it had to be downloaded. On a 1.5 down ADSL, 2 Gigs is a monstrosity.

Yeah I guess that's true. And when you have users like one of my coworkers or AHadley - data caps could be pricey.

I started playing Tribes: Ascend and noticed you could buy your way to kick-a** weapons. Seeing it in practice I kind of lost interest.

Think of BZ and imagine you buy the ability for your ship spawn and have 2 SPs or 2X Blast. To me it's surprising games that provide a marked advantage for money have any popularity at all.

Look at Nexus, they have skyrocketed in their playerbase because of the Free2Play, Pay4Extras system. You can work your way up to gain all the fancy guns and supplies, but things expire on a weekly/bi-weekly/monthly basis (depending on how much you paid) ... for you to buy it again with play points or money. What really sucked ballz is buying a gun that you thought looked awesome and had good specs, but was crap when it was in game. Tough luck, no refund or grace period (at least when I played)

Here's a somewhat dated story describing how a game producer had little to no respect for their subscribers.

"The real joy of EVE has always been the incredible player responses, and thousands of human players suddenly went full Cylon on their own population centers. They blockaded major trade hubs, especially Jita, the most populated location in the EVE universe. Unable to destroy the hub itself, they targeted the nearby Jita memorial, a circular space station just sitting there absorbing ludicrous levels of firepower. And this is where it gets brilliant. CCP had erected the Jita memorial five years prior because they wanted to honor players who had solved an earlier quest, but they also fitted it with hit points and exploding parts, because they know exactly what players are like.
CCP acceded to player demands and changed their ridiculous update plans, even changing the plaque on the destroyed memorial to remember the riots as a new monument to the developer's true victory. Because when even the people who hate you are paying subscriptions to call you a douchebag, you've won harder than they can conceive of.
