Top of the Line Android Tablet

Post by FirBirGir »

Hi Guys,

I'm going to buy my wife a 10" Android tablet and wanted to see what experience or recommendations you may have. I haven't visited a store yet to touch 'n feel test any units so far but lightweight is important as well as decent battery life. I'm a big fan of Samsung so they're on the list to check out. What about the Toshiba Excite?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I still love my "old" Galaxy SII. I will probably stay with Samsung and upgrade to the SIII or similar in a few months.

Oh and by the way. . remember the conversation we had where I wanted to control my PC with my phone. Well I've had amazing success with RealVNC. Works like a charm with my phone. I can now essentially have full access to my work PC, my home PC, and my laptop, not at the same time of course.

The only drawback, if you want to call it one, is it does not transfer audio.

Did you get the vnc viewer from google play? I found one vnc viewer app that looks like the right one, though it's not realvnc.

I too still love my SII, even more so with ICS.

Yes I did get the real RealVNC viewer from googleplay for $7 something. My company also bought two licenses, which were $30 each for the 'Personal' level software.

I also have the 'Enterprise Addition' for my personal use that cost 'much less'

So far I'm very impressed with the software all-around. It's liquid smooth running a wi-fi connection. But of course, we have no need for that. 4G is also smooth, but not as liquid as wi-fi. 3G is slightly clunky, maybe 500ms to 2 second lag (I sat there and watched my desktop as I did stuff off the phone). On my phone the desktop display is pretty good, but on a tablet, it's like you're there in front of the PC, the res is awesome.

I've been playing with the Google nexus 7 tablet and i like it a lot for reading.
Plus its vanilla android with the manufacturer UI on it.
Go with the nexus 10. Its made by Samsung i believe and being a nexus device it won't be stacked with the usual bloat ware.

That one is high on my list and I'll look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which is probably the same unit with Samsung's "enhancements").

I haven't found a Toshiba Excite yet to check out. Spec's look OK but I've never seen a Toshiba tablet to know how it would compare to Samsung.

Your other option would be the Samsung note 10.1 which is basically the same tablet but with a stylus and some stylus-specific apps.

I got a chance to play with all the different tablets over the weekend. Gotta love the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, it was my favorite but couldn't get a decent deal on it (too popular right now, everyone is selling out of it). The Toshiba Excite has a nice feel too, similarly priced to the Tab 2. Ultimately, I decided to go with the Lenovo Ideapad A2109. It's a 9" tablet with a quad-core processor and I got it at a good price - $229. It's well built with a metal reinforced frame (makes it a little on the heavy side for a 9" but lighter than the G Tablet we had).

The biggest complaint I've heard about this tablet was screen brightness. It seems bright enough to me, I typically don't run a tablet at full brightness to maximize battery anyway.

I need to re-rip my movies to 720p though, 480p doesn't look all that great on the 1280x800 display.

Got any suggestions on a low cost BluRay ripper? I use DVDFab but it's another $200 to get all the BluRay tools.
