Scavenger Papercraft

Post by JerreyRough »

Hello! I just had my final exam today, so I decided to celebrate by starting a new hobby: Papercraft. And what better to start with than Battlezone!

Image

There's another two shots here. Its not perfect, but its my first-ever papercraft. I'll do more in the future, including more battlezone vehicles 8). I originally started with the Grizzly tank, but I printed it too small and the geometry is a bit more complicated than the Scavenger.

I made it using Pepakura Designer and the 3D model editor Blender. Blender to clean up the model and apply its texture, then Pepakura to convert the 3D model into 2D form to print off. After that its just cutting and gluing the paper together.

That is really cool! I didn't know there were tools to convert 3D models into 2D prints for assembly.

Definitely post more photos if you make more.

Very nice! Makes me think you could lay some fiberglass and epoxy over it and have a working RC model.

It's the first time I've ever seen a physical model of a BZ craft larger than the size of a fist.

Sketchup also has a free plugin like Pepakura called "UNFOLD". Not sure how it would compare.

I really like the idea of RC Battlezone vehicles. An undeployed Recycler would be a good choice.

UNFOLD looks like a nice alternative for smaller models without tones of polygons. Though Pepakura can automatically unfold the model, and its smart enough to stop itself from unfolding onto itself (it runs whenever you unfold, so it fixes your mistakes as well). There's also a bunch of extra tools/features just for Papercrafting that are fantastic to have, such as auto-generating tabs (along with the correct size/dimensions of the tab).

So could this be used with a CNC router? I can imagine printint it out and gluing to thin sheets of aluminum cut in the right shapes...
