What happens when you fly a multi-rotor encased in a Faraday Cage between two large Tesla Coils?

Re: Commence Building
Very, very close to a BFT special event.
I ask myself, 'how much tech can I cram on this thing and still get airborne and stay out of jail?'
Let's find out.

Re: Commence Building
Tried to pull-off a party trick in this video. My little 720P #11 808 keyfob camera has a FPS of 30 and it falls in and out of sync with the motor rotation. I was experimenting and hoping to flash "battlezoneclub.com" on the motor bell, but discovered the frame duration or frame smear is a bit too much to actually read the letters. Maybe my new 1080P camera with a lower setting of 720P@60FPS might make it readable. . .
I've removed a good amount of the jello-effect, but these micro-cams are incredibly difficult to remove resonance vibrations (jello effect) as they are very sensitive to the slightest vibration, they just don't have the internal mass to absorb any higher frequency mechanical vibrations. For the most part it's smooth, except when descending hard.

Oh, and this isn't the surprise I was referring to.

Who's "battlezoneclub.com"?
Pretty good picture, how high do you think it is, i can see the horizon curve. hehe

Opps, I meant .org. And that's what was on the motor.
No curvature, other than the effect of the wide angle lens. I estimate I got up around 300 feet on that flight. RC craft are "required" to stay under 400 feet, but no one seems to observe that rule, nor does the FAA enforce it. I don't think I've broken 400 feet yet.

Re: Commence Building
Thanks.
And here's my first 1080P video. It's raw footage, so please excuse the brief periods of strong buffeting of me fighting the strong head wind and trying to hold an orientation. Also you might want to turn down the sound a bit. Give me time, I'll get better.
The Foxtech V3 is also really small, about the size of my 808#11. I knew it was going to be a bigger challenge since the size is roughly the same, but higher res. It will be hard to keep out the jello.
I also realize this quad is really taking on the look of a steam-punk wood contraption. All I need now is some 32 gauge brass sheet for trim highlights.

I put together a quick box with the camera suspended inside. It servers as a vibration absorber, glare hood, as well as a crash box.

Re: Commence Building
Awesome! how much did all the parts cost? you should add some solar panels and a computer with 3g Internet connected to that camera. if you do that you could start a video conversation and see where it flies.

Re: Commence Building
I have maybe $320 in the quad... but that's just the quad.
motors...$46
homemade frame...$6 ($$ mostly hardware)
ESCs....$24
props....$6
control board... $30
battery...$10
1080P camera (also FPV capable) ... $171
misc. (colored LEDs, high output, driver required, CREE LEDs, low output LEDs, wire connectors. wire)....$40
8ch. radio receiver + satellite signal boost module .... $30
But you also need at least a 6ch transmitter ($50-$400)
Battery charger...$12
Battery charger power supply (i use an old PC PS)...free or $12
and maybe extra batteries, props, wood booms, etc. ....$30
and of course soldering iron, solder, misc building stuff... $50
So. . .in the end, and you're wanting 1080P video. . .and you buy a cheap Chinese transmitter, you're probably looking at around $450.

You realize he hasn't invented the quadrocopter right?Black Dog Grizzly wrote:You're a genius, FANTASTIC INVENTION. are you able to build other stuff, Like a (xbox360 portable?)
I'm sure he'd be much wealthier if he had.

Re: Commence Building
I'm just riding the tech wave of gyro and accelerometer stabilized aerial remote control and robotics. It's so new, who knows what will pop out next.
I'm finally moving into FPV. Hopefully the next video will either be me scanning the ground. . .

or the LIDAR . . .

I've been busy.

Re: Commence Building
NPR did a story on "small tech" yesterday and they mentioned that guy's research.
While this has nothing to do with flying, but if you want small, this is as small as it gets.

Re: Commence Building
You guys will find this control and environmental feedback ability amazing. Also of note, if you're not aware of the difficulty, is the incredibly stable hover these quads have. Imagine a day not too far off where you can play catch. . .or to catch a suicide attempt off a bridge, building, etc.
