Star Citizen

Post by Blunt Force Trauma »

Star Citizen may be the most ambitious MMO/single player game ever created. It looks awesome.

It uses a heavily modified version of Cry-engine 3. The guy who created Wing Commander back in the early 90's is heading the development. He initially asked, through kickstarter crowd funding, for 2 million to start. . . the game has now raised 67 million!

It will only be for the PC. No console porting to compromise the graphics. The hardware specs for the game will require a fairly high-end PC at a minimum. The on-screen polys can be as high as 300K.

It will have no rolling fee, but will be supported entirely from purchasing ships and hanger space. However, you can buy chits for extra currency.

It looks absolutely amazing and could very well be the game of the decade.

Here's the website.

Sounds like Grinder's Sea Fight on the money making end of it.
Cry engine 3 required directx 11 specs IIRC, I'd need a new pc and that isn't going to happen.

It has a lot of good pedigree from the look of its staff, so I'm going to keep an eye on it. It has kept all its milestone markers . . . no more than 2 weeks late on any in the last 2 years, so its promise of going gold by summer of next year will probably happen.

If nothing else, its in-engine videos look darn close to pre-rendered animation, and are very pretty to watch.

10k charactors, 7 mill. starships, I hope they have all the insides done with great detail.

I saw they are keeping it @ directx 11 I have like 10.5 and the Asus is maxed out. :(
Quad core, 8GB ram 1 GB video memory.

So maybe to run smooth at 75fps I'd need an 8 core 16GB ram pc. hehe

The more I read about it, the more impressive it gets. As the monetary stretch goals rise, the more elements are added. The ship interiors will have around 80% functionality. The HUDs will be 90-100% functional. Full gimbaled thrusters and gimbal assisted cannons. All of which are fully animated. Full crysis level FPS on planets and space stations. You'll be able to leave your ship and FPS board other ships. Collision detection with destroyed ship debris, other ships, rocks, etc. will be included. No obvious loading screens.

One of the coolest things will be ships manned by multiple people, possibly around 8.

It's like combining 3 or 4 game genres into one and having the poly count be sky high along with the lighting assets of the crytec engine.

But as you say and is an already stated caveat, to run it maxed out, you'll have to have a $1500 box at a minimum to get around 60fps.

Here's a video of 10 of the around 30 ships. Some of the video is of unfinished ships.

You can "buy-in" with only $20.

Trouble is, it's like buying BZ, but only being allowed to fly the razor. You're a peon until you spend more money or grind your way to modifications or a better ship.

Oh. . and as I said, unless you have a high end box, it may not even run.

To buy into everything, it's $2700! No one really needs everyship but you know there are some who can't wait to drop that much on a game...

Fancy ships, so much for Star Trek, they should have done a game like this or Star Wars.
That way the players would already know a background on the game.

This game will be soo complex that it'd take too much of your time (and money) just to know your way around it.
If 20 lasted a while to let you learn at your own pace... but a high end pc is still an issue and I haven't looked at
any hardware that's available in about 8 years. Maybe in a few years i'll consider a new pc build, have 4 now and all
work.

I'm going to continue to keep an eye on it for a few months. That way I'll have a better feel on how it is developing in full and also for the price of hardware capable to run the game to drop another 10-20%.

Speaking of milestones . . . Star Citizen will be released in six main sections, the dog fighting component, 'Arena Commander 1.0' of which is the single player component of 'Squadron 42' was released a couple days ago. The other 5 sections are slated to be released over the coming months to be completed by late next summer. It sounds like it will be the biggest game in history.

What impresses me is Chris Roberts and his company, along with the fans, completely control the game. No big production company like Activision pushing them in ten different directions and pressuring them to push out the game too early. Now at 67 million raised and pretty consistently adding a million a week, he should have no problem keeping on schedule. He has like 5 studios working in the US and Europe.

Oh yea, it's supposed to be Oculus Rift supported.

What I have seen so far is very impressive. I'm pretty sure my fairly rugged PC would struggle with this game, I doubt I would upgrade just for SC but the street says 2016 before the game is completely released and I'll be due for a new PC or an upgrade by then.

The naysayers are calling it a scam and if it is, it's the most well developed scam I've ever seen. The amount of effort needed to make the cinematics is beyond the realm of scamming.

I'm excited, hopefully it comes to fruition and is engaging enough to play.

First. . . MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE.

I'm 99% confident it's not a scam since Arena Commander 1.0 is now released. Plus the dozens of videos such as the 'Around the Verse' (Q&A) and the '10 for the Chairman' (Q&A) to Chris Roberts, 'Meet the Devs' series. Plus Chris Roberts has his entire reputation bundled into it. Plus they've been keeping release promises within a month or their claims.

To me the biggest concern is if RSI can keep such a massively complex game from being too buggy.
