Hello! New guy here!

Post by JerreyRough »

Hello guys!

I'm one of the few who learned of and love Battlezone because of Rise of the Black Dogs. Last summer I re-played BZ and decided to find out more, which is when I learned that it was originally a PC game. I've since downloaded the 1.4/1.5beta versions of BZ from battlezone1.com and liked this game even more, though the music of RotBD remains my personal favorite soundtrack out of the Battlezone games. I tried playing online with it, but wasn't very successful. :S Oh well.

Anyways, my love for Battlezone has resulted in my attempt to re-create Battlezone somehow. I've found battlezone3.com, but I think I'm going to skip out on that one :P. At first I wanted to make a Starcraft 2 mod, since I've used the Warcraft 3 editor and Starcraft 2's was similar and could of had been perfect to re-create BZ. No support for hitboxes though, so I moved on. Then I met another guy with a similar goal and we started to work together on making it a reality. We got a storyline that fits into the Battlezone universe, with one sizable difference, new units, new gameplay concepts, etc. However, now that project (nicknamed "BZP") is on hold and we're going to work on another one instead; but I'm still going to make a BZ something in a newer engine or game mod. Not the BZP one mind you, but one with more Battlezone 1-ness.

I'm decided to make this little BZ project of mine in Unity 3D, which I think is a fantastic engine to put it in. Plus its pretty nifty on the programming side of things (three different programming languages! yay!). So far all I've done is re-create the Grizzly tank in Blender, then UV mapping the original Grizzly texture to it, but I plan on doing more (the Soviet scout unit is next on my list!).

So how's my Grizzly re-creation? It's not 100% accurate, but I tried my best.

Two more pics located here.

I want to recreate all of the vehicles, even though it'll take me some time to make them all, as well as the structures for this project. I lack the textures for everything else though, so if someone has them and could give them to me... well, you'd be my savior! :D I'm not introducing any new units either.

The project will have campaign and multiplayer, though I don't have any more details than that ATM. I'm calling it "Battlezone: Dark Side of Pluto" and takes place a few months after BZ1 ended. Here's a bit of info on the campaign, which will focus more on the plot-line, hopefully will have more drama, and will have an increased variety of missions.

Deep-space radar has detected a massive explosion on the surface of Pluto, Commander. The soviets have sent their own “investigation” to the planet, so we’re guessing it wasn’t them that made the explosion. Command has decided to send you and your platoon to the planet to investigate and report your findings. Be wary commander: we have no idea what caused it, and fury survivors are not out of the question. But do not fire upon the CCA under any circumstances.

We’re counting on you to find out. Good luck commander.

battlezone1.com isn't a site.

You can just export the Bz models to 3D Studio Max without going through the trouble to recreate them.

I posted the 24Bit tank skins here:
http://www.battlezoneclub.org/forum/vie ... =69&t=2677

The rest of the skins can be converted using the map viewer. I'm not sure where the zip of converted skins are atm.

I don't know much about the Unity 3D engine. I've worked in the Bz2 engine, Bz engine, Unreal engine and the Far Cry sandbox editor.

Erp, I meant battlezone1.net sorry.

I wasn't aware of that method, but I don't own it and I'm not a fan of pirating/torrenting it. I need the experience modelling stuff anyway. Thank you very much for posting that link though! Later down the line I think I'll go and get the rest of the skins if I still need them.

Here's an excellent example of Unity 3D. Theres also a plugin that allows Unity to work in browsers :). I like it mostly because of its programming stuff (three supported languages) and you get all but a bit of (mostly) unnecessary features.

3DS Max has free trial versions, get to use it for 30 days.
Besides, any version of the game that isn't off the cd is in the same boat.

Unity looks good.

Just as Sketchup eliminated the cost of easily producing high-poly models and Blender allowed the average joe to make a full fleshed 3D animation film, Unity could be the beginning of taking out the cost of producing a high-end game.

Yea I knew about that, but I'll wait a while until I do the trial; I wouldn't be able to do all I want in 30 days anyway. Blender is good enough for what I'm doing.

While they are in the same boat, purchasing a new CD version of BZ1/BZ2 wouldn't help the developers at all. But purchasing 3DS Max helps the devs. I'm a student ATM as well, so I might purchase it in the next couple of years while I have the cost reduction, especially since it's what everyone uses in the industry (mostly) anyway.

Indeed. I remember seeing that film a while back. A very sad and well put together film.

:) Thanks!

I have now made two more vehicles: the Soviet Czar and Flanker. Both are located here. I still have to texture them, but I will do that another time.

Though I'd give an update as to what I've been doing ;).

Thanks to Josiah here, I'm not going to remodel all of the units anymore. I've been concentrating on the programming end of things and fixing up the odd model or two for testing purposes. So far I've been mostly successful: I have low-lying vehicles hovering and found a way to reduce bobbing to a degree. Far from perfection but its a start!

Though I'm definably not going to make it as ambitious as I originally wanted it to be; after all, I'm still relatively inexperienced at programming. Besides, I've got creative ideas and writing skill to make my own story so I might do that first.

He he thanks. I'd make a CCA one too but you can't have big shoulder pads in this :(. I can still do it, but it just wouldn't be the same. I haven't seen a chinese pilot yet though, so maybe them ;). I might try my hand at a Mars/BZ-themed texture pack. :)

Oh, and I finally fixed my hover code in unity. Vehicles' would make a ray that'd find things to float on below it, but would find its own colliders when sideways and upside down; resulting in spontaneous flying up :S. It's been fixed now though :D

Howdy... been forever since I played BZ, but maybe I can help with 3d stuff. Is the offer of the stock bz1 objects still valid? That would be a starting point for me. Anyway... good game, glad I blew the dust off my CD and stuck it in... memories!

Hello, are you the Biohazard that made "super soldiers" long ago?

If you get a trial version of 3D Studio Max, you can use the "vdf" or "sdf" import plugin for all bz models, there's even a "geo" importer.

BIOHAZARD LIVESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I thought you died in a horrible crash when exploratoriums went down. Would you believe you are the ONLY ONE with a copy of biohazardBZ and battlesoldiers? That mod did not get mirrored anywhere. I need that mod :) that is, if you didn't wipe them out after so many years.

Dude. Tribes. '|U|' is waiting! Commando misses you! Find us on BR Annihilation server... got a lot to catch up on ;)

If this is the "original" biohazard, and he still has those mods, I'd love to be able to host them.... hint hint.
