The guy is a neuro-science graduate student. It will be interesting to learn how screwed up he is, because, well. . .crazy-a** neuroscientists seem to be the in thing now.

Yeah heard about this.
Crazy is crazy.

What a bitch to open up in a packed movie theatre. Reminiscent of Montreal engineering school shooter here in Canada who had mediocre marks and apparently couldn't deal with women doing better. Opened up on them and killed a number of them.

This is why I don't like guns. Crazy people have them.

I don't see how not one person had a CCL permit & weapon in that vicinity to take him down. A tragedy indeed, especially the 3 month old that got shot point blank. We really need to bring back the firing squad for people like this, I hate having my tax money go to people like this in jail. A one time fee of $3.00 worth of ammo is a lot cheaper than spending $13,000 a year. Plus he'd get a taste of his own medicine.

I agree that death is the best option for criminals like this but don't think a CCL would have made much difference.
The person carrying would be (relatively:) ) sane whereas this guy was not.
Sane people have second thoughts and have something to lose and something to live for.
This guy thought he was the joker for f*** sakes... he wouldn't turn tail and run if someone pulled a gun and certainly wouldn't have stopped shooting if they did.
Probably thought his smoke bombs were going to make people laugh to death and disfigure them too.

I seen & held a AR 15 - there the same as the M16; no one will have that firepower to combat in a packed/darked movie theater - in all fairness the gunman had the clear advantage & obviously had some sort of plan beforehand.

If one person was even armed with a 9mm it would've ended, sounded like he stopped because he was out of ammo??? This is def. one for the records

Haven't been following it that closely honestly.

s**t that people this nuts just don't kill themselves rather than a room full of people for no reason.

M-16 and M-4 are considered AR-15 rifles, same model just different set ups (mainly the barrel length). No one can simply walk into a theater and not be noticed with a weapon like that, the news reports I've read said he came through the exit door while others claim it was the front entrance (which really makes no sense). He had a plan and made arrangements well in advance. If I have to go through metal detectors to see a stupid azz movie like Dear John, I'll never go to a theater again.

I had read he came through the emergency exit too.

Someone with a concealed weapon could have mitigated the death toll if they were in the right place in the theater, since it went on for a relatively long time (I'm reading 10 minutes or more) But it was a packed and dark theater with sound blaring out the speakers, I'm sure it was total chaos at the avaliable exits. If there had been two or three people with handguns, the others with handguns may have thought they were part of the mayhem.

If ppl had guns there they would still try to leave first and only fire if they had to, otherwise they are likely to hit anyone.

Lot of places are packed with a lot of people (Walmart, other service/goods related places, public events, bus stations, subways, etc. etc.) If everywhere was required for a metal detector test, I'd just stay home for the most part. America's freedom is long gone ever since 9/11

Exactly. In this type of situation innocent bystanders with concealed weapons may very well have added to the death toll.

I wouldn't have gone for the exit if I had my sidearm, that's the first place people were diving for -- perfect pool of targets. Any other carriers 'should' be able to tell the good person (who is taking cover and not shooting everyone) apart from the bad person (shooting everyone with a rifle).

So i heard more info on this now, over 100 FBI showed up in unmarked cars in 1 to 1.5 hours.
The Shooter gave himself up and willingly told them his place was booby trapped.
A college student which normally don't have much money in this case spent 20k on weapons and without training booby traps his place. A survivor of another shooting somewhere else died in this movie shooting.

31 People injured in Canada from another shooting and was said they may stop the sell of ammo because of it.

Shooting in Norway.

Rockefeller foundation predicts 13000 to die at 2012 olympics.

The gun treaty is what 5 days away in the UN.

It is extremely difficult to say what how one would react in a situation such as that. Even with prior combat experience. Since I have none, I cannot be sure. But if I had my little J-frame 442 shrouded hammer which I carry quite a bit, I'm thinking I would have stayed on the floor between the seats unless he approached within 30 feet or so, or stood in-line with my row and I had no choice but to unload at him OR if it became obvious his attention was opposite me and I had a reasonable distance to approach <60ft, before I had to begin shooting at <30ft. Very small cc guns are virtually useless over 60 feet even if you are calm and standing still, and over 30 feet if you are moving and the human target is not, and over 15 feet if both you are the human sized target are moving.

But again, it was dark, the movie blaring, a high powered rifle going off ear piercing loud. . .it was total chaos, who knows how nightmarish it must have been in there.

HERE is an awesome video on the ramifications, use and choices of cc, jumped to the point of a revolver very similar to mine.

The guy was also wearing a flak jacket so if anyone returned fire their chances of taking him down in the first shot or two would be greatly reduced. Enough time for him to react I think

And yeah one woman who was killed survived a shooting at the Eaton Center in Toronto not too long ago.
s**t coincidence.

Yes I saw it reported "flak jacket". Not sure what it actually was since the reported attire could have meant a FLAK jacket or a police issue style vest. My 442 shooting .38+P rounds will probably not penetrate, but would hurt like a bitch. But I prefer to keep regular .38 rounds in it as the .38+P rounds snap the gun very hard in my hands, so the remaining rounds would not be near as accurate if I am firing in quick succession.

Getting hit with a larger caliber handgun round wearing a police issue vest at relatively close range <30 feet, say anything above .380 round, has been described as someone hitting you very hard with a medium size ball peen hammer to getting hit as hard as someone can swing on the unprotected body, so it might have been enough to make him fall to the ground in pain and give up the assault.

A 230 grain 45 full metal jacket will make him fall to the ground in pain.
