He's baaaack

Post by Lil Stealth »

Hi everyone. :)
Like I said in my post earlier over at Battlezone1, I was actually Googling around, decided to Google Search Battlezone.
And boy was I surprised and excited to see how active everyone and everything still is.
It's good to see so many familiar names, and new ones too.
I actually asked over at Battlezone 1, and I'll ask here as well.
Is BZ available for Mac users yet?!

My main computer now is my Macbook Pro. I definitely won't be gaming while I'm using it, but
I'm putting together a Hackintosh to put in my room. It would be great to jump back in with you guys
and mag your face off. ;)

Just kidding. I'm sure I'd get creamed.

Hope to hear from you guys.

Hi Stealth, welcome back!

There's a thread about BZ on a Mac using Wine I believe, do a search and you should find it. If VMWare or some other virtual machine software is available for Mac, you could set up a virtual XP PC on your Mac just for playing BZ.

I don't see a version of BZ ever running natively on the Mac. It would require a rewrite of the software.

Bootcamp might be better than using vmware on a mac. That would run BZ just fine. :)

I'm familiar with VMWare but I don't know what's available for Mac and what would work best. I'll defer to Hitch's superior knowledge, just don't tell him I said that.

Vmware fusion for Mac. I'm sure it's ok but my experience with Macs is mostly limited to the built in boot camp which works flawlessly.
Bz doesn't do so well in a virtual machine unless you've got some pretty specific hardware and do a lot of tinkering.

Does VMWare simulate the hard devices? Compared to the horsepower available today, a virtual video card should still outperform vintage 1998 hardware.

It does, but generally it uses it's own generic device drivers and you have to install vmware tools to passthrough peripherals.
There are some configuration file hacks you can do to trick it into thinking you're running on an OEM system (I've done this for the purpose of OS OEM licensing and deployment image creation) and likely you could do this with other hardware too, but I've not seen it done before.
I know that you can do this in some older versions of Xen Desktop (not the most recent - you have to go back a couple of versions) and with a select number of video cards you can pass through directly from the vm.

That's why I suggest boot camp. It's kind of like a virtual machine, but also like dual booting operating systems except you can simply use a swiping gesture to switch between the two.
This, of course, only became possible once Apple started using intel chipsets and CPUs.

Bootcamp installed, and I've already kicked some asses at magging! :)

Though, I did notice Spocks installer removed my maps -rolls eyes- oh well.
Does anyone know where a map pack would be with the good custom maps?
I feel so out-of-touch. Ha. Or does the installer from this forum still have my maps in it? And will it work on the same server in multiplayer with the people that used Spocks installer?

so many questions!

1.5 works there and I don't recall which maps are around.
